Template QA and Compatibility Notes
How to review editable templates before submitting, printing, importing, or sharing them.
Every resume, cover letter, reference sheet, and presentation should be checked in the software you plan to use. Start with the preview, edit the source file, then proof the final export before sending it anywhere important.
Before editing
Open the preview and choose a layout that fits your role, seniority, and amount of evidence. A one-page resume should feel selective; a longer resume should earn the extra space with stronger detail.
In Word or Google Docs
Replace every bracketed field, check heading styles, confirm dates line up, and remove any sample claim that is not true for your experience. Importing a DOCX into Google Docs can shift spacing, so inspect page breaks after import.
For PDF export
Export a clean PDF only after checking margins, links, file name, selectable text, and whether the strongest evidence appears high on the first page.
For ATS submissions
Use standard headings, keep contact details as selectable text, avoid hiding key information in graphics, and follow the employer's requested file type. No template can guarantee how every employer's parser or recruiter workflow will handle a file.
For visual templates
Creative and presentation-style layouts are useful when the reader will inspect the document visually. For strict application portals, choose a conservative resume and keep a plain-text backup.
For presentations
Open PPTX files before presenting, check fonts and slide spacing, test speaker notes, and export a PDF handout when you need a version that will look consistent for recipients.
Final pass
Read the final file aloud once, check links and phone numbers, remove comments or tracked changes, and save a role-specific copy before sending.
FAQ
Does this guarantee ATS results?
No. Use conservative layouts for application portals, keep text selectable, and follow the employer's instructions.
Can I edit the DOCX in Google Docs?
Usually, but spacing can change after import. Inspect the imported file and the exported PDF before submitting.
Should I send DOCX or PDF?
Send the file type the employer requests. If either is allowed, use PDF for visual consistency and keep the DOCX as your editable master.
